FAQs. General Information

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy ("hoh-mee-OP-uh-thee"), also known as homeopathic ("hoh-meeuh-PATH-ik") medicine, is a whole medical system that originated in Europe and has been practiced in the United States since the early nineteenth century. Homeopathy is based on three principles:

  • Like Cures Like. Homeopathy demonstrates that a substance that produces a certain set of symptoms in a healthy person can cure a sick person experiencing those same symptoms. For example, onions make your eyes water when cut. If you have a cold or allergies and your symptoms include a runny nose, the likely remedy to treat your runny nose would be Allium Cepa, which is made from onions.
  • Minimum Dose. Unlike conventional medicines, a homeopathic medicine is believed to be more effective when its active ingredient is diluted and succussed (shaken vigorously). Data indicates that the homeopathic medicine gains increased effectiveness with each additional dilution-succussion step. Furthermore, the safety profile of the medicine increases with increased dilution.
  • Individual Medicines. Ideally, homeopathic treatment is tailored to each person. In this case, practitioners select medicines according to a total picture of the patient, including not only physical symptoms but also lifestyle, emotional and mental states, and other factors.

Why Homeopathy?

The key to Doctor Wise's pharmacist-developed homeopathic medicines is that they are strong in relieving symptoms, but gentle in the way they work:

  • Made with natural active ingredients
  • No known drug interactions and non-habit forming
  • Can be taken in conjunction with prescription medications
  • Wide margin of safety, no fear of mis-dosing or overdosing

Can I take this every day?

We do not recommend doing so. In general, over-the counter homeopathic medicines should be used when symptoms are present and are not labeled for continuous daily long-term use. As the manufacturer, we request that you follow the directions on the label, which state to consult a physician if symptoms persist for more than seven days or worsen.

Can I take this with other medications?

In general, homeopathic products have no known drug interactions. It is acceptable to use other medications together with the homeopathic medicines if necessary. We recommend separating the other medicines from the homeopathic medicine, and the homeopathic medicines from each other, by at least 15 minutes.

Can I take this if I am lactose intolerant?

Hyland's Doctor Wise Menopause tablets contain about 192 milligrams of lactose (the sugar from cow’s milk – no protein is used) per tablet. While everyone is different, most lactose intolerant individuals need to ingest about 5000 mg of lactose before they experience symptoms of lactose intolerance. If you are very concerned, seek the advice of a licensed health care professional before using this product. If your physician has determined that you are specifically “allergic to lactose,” you should avoid our tablets.

Can I take these if I am allergic to Sulfa?

The homeopathic Sulphur 12X contained in Doctor Wise Menopause tablets is chemically different from sulfa-type prescription medicine.

Can I take more than one Doctor Wise product at a time? (active ingredients may overlap)

Yes you can. If you have a combination of symptoms and feel you need to use more than one Doctor Wise product, that is okay. We suggest allowing at least one hour between using two various products. Because Doctor Wise products may have some common ingredients, our recommendation would be to not use more than two products together.

How many tablets can I take in a day from a single product?

You can take up to 12 tablets, or six doses, in a 24-hour period. Always follow label directions. As the manufacturer, we request that you follow the directions on the label, which state to take two tablets at the onset of symptoms and repeat every four hours as needed.

Can I take these if I am perimenopausal?

Yes. All Doctor Wise medicines temporarily relieve the core symptoms of hot flashes, night sweats, irritability and headaches common during perimenopause and menopause. Always follow label directions. Consult a physician if symptoms persist for more than seven days or worsen.

Can I take this if I have high blood pressure?

In general, because the ingredients in homeopathic medicines are in small amounts, they do not have any known drug interactions or contraindications. However, if you are concerned about using a homeopathic medicine with a preexisting condition, we recommend that you speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Can I take these if I am on Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?

Homeopathic medicines have no known drug interactions. We suggest that you check with your physician, as no formal studies have been conducted to test the safety of homeopathic medicines in women using Hormone Replacement Therapy.

What is the expiration date of this product?

There is no expiration date on this product because homeopathic medicines, when stored properly (away from moisture and excessive heat or cold), can be used for many years. However, if you notice the appearance of the medicine has changed, you should replace it. If you’re interested in knowing when the product you have was manufactured, you can call our customer service line at 800-624-9659 and provide the lot number (the imprinted six-digit number on the bottle). Is there really a Doctor Wise?

Sort of. Doctor Wise is a new brand of homeopathic medicines that ease symptoms of menopause. Doctor Wise medicines are developed by Hyland’s, the largest manufacturer of homeopathic medicines in the US. The inspiration for the brand is actually a homeopathic pharmacist who created various popular formulas in the 1900s for Luyties, a homeopathic company that operated in the St. Louis area. Doctor Wise, as depicted in the brand and logo, is fictional.
